Access Michigan

Glossary

What the accessibility terms used throughout this guide mean.

KultureCity Certification
Staff trained by medical professionals to support sensory needs. Certified venues provide free sensory bags (headphones, fidget tools, lap pads, cue cards) and typically a sensory area or room on premises.
Track Chair
All-terrain electric wheelchair suitable for sand, dirt trails, snow, and other surfaces a standard wheelchair can't cross. Michigan DNR has the largest state-park track-chair loaner program in the U.S.
Museums for All
National program offering $2–$3 admission at participating museums to visitors showing an EBT or WIC card.
Social Narrative / Visual Guide
Downloadable preview booklet with photos and step-by-step descriptions so visitors — especially autistic visitors — know what to expect before arriving.
ASL
American Sign Language. Many venues offer ASL-interpreted tours with advance notice (typically 2 weeks).
T-coil / Induction Loop
Hearing loop system that transmits audio directly to telecoil-equipped hearing aids and cochlear implants, cutting background noise.
Assisted Listening Device (FM)
Free loaner receiver with headphones that amplifies a venue's audio feed for guests who need it.
Access Pass
Free lifetime National Parks entry pass for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a permanent disability. Apply at nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm.
Aira
Free visual interpreting app connecting blind/low-vision users with sighted agents via smartphone camera. Free at partner venues, including GRPM.
